What Is Autoimmune Disease

Before I share with you the list of autoimmune diseases’s do you know what these diseases are, so many of us are experiencing the symptoms but really don’t understand what is happening within our body? Our immune systems are confused and not performing normally, so for some reason, our system is attacking our own body. This is causing damage to certain parts of our bodies especially our joints, and what is causing this damage is chronic inflammation.

There Are Four Stages Of Inflammation

You will experience possibly four stages, but everyone does not always experience all of them. So much of this all depends on the severity of your body’s reaction, now there is good and there are bad conditions you must be aware of. When this reaction is to bacteria and viruses short-term it actually is protecting your body, but when your body’s reaction becomes chronic it is actually causing damage.

  • Redness
  • Heat
  • Swelling
  • Pain

Short-Term Treatment Plan

I have experienced the best short-term treatment plan is to go with natural methods first, and the reason for this is I seem to not do well with medications. So what are some best natural ways to treat your minor symptoms from natural inflammation I recommend are:

Long-Term Treatment Plan

If you are like me and experience chronic inflammation you need to come up with a long-term treatment plan, and believe it or not your diet is your most powerful source to manage your autoimmune diseases. The second key is to learn how to manage your anxiety and stress.

  • Olive oil
  • Spinach
  • Kale
  • Almonds
  • Walnuts
  • Salmon
  • Tuna
  • Mackerel
  • Sardines
  • Strawberries
  • Blueberries
  • Oranges
  • Tomatoes

Even though tomatoes are on this list as well, I have found they actually have the reverse effect me. I also experience if I consume processed foods regularly these also increase my symptoms. Since everyone’s immune system reacts differently, I suggest you consider doing an elimination diet, and you can purchase books on how to do this, or consult your physician.

Highest Inflammatory Foods

  • Refined Carbs
  • Fried Foods
  • Sugar-Sweetened Beverages
  • Red Meat
  • Margarine
  • Shortening
  • Lard
  • Eggs

Even as dedicated as I am to my diet I consume some foods that cause inflammation in moderation, and I strongly believe very few of us can eliminate all these trigger foods from our diets completely. Best Autoimmune Diet Plan

From my years of battling my own autoimmune diseases I have come up with the best diet for me, but you must understand everyone needs to come up with the perfect diet that fits them. Many people with the autoimmune disease’s also experience food allergies and intolerance, so that is the reason I highly recommend you do an elimination diet.

  • Vegetables
  • Fruits
  • Grass-fed poultry
  • Fish
  • Gluten-free grains

I must admit going grocery shopping is one of my most dreaded chores to do, and as you look at my diet I am sure you can understand why. Gluten is well-known to increase inflammation in most people with autoimmune diseases, so this is really important to consider if you or anyone in your family has any of these diseases. Being single I am spending twice as much money on my meals than the average single person, and eating out is almost impossible for me without taking the risk of having a flare-up. I also find dairy products are a trigger for my symptoms, so I consume these in moderation to avoid experiencing a major flare-up.

Exercise Is A Must

Even though any type of physical activity is a challenge for me, I have found regular exercise is a part of my chronic inflammation treatment plan. What I have found to work the best for me is daily walks with my dog several times per day, but the key to exercise with autoimmune disease is very short periods several times per day. Of course, you must consider what disease’s you have to add this to your treatment plan, and like everything else we are all different what we can do and what we can’t do in the form of physical activity.


I have also found the past few years since my symptoms are less severe I am able to cycle at my local YMCA, but again I must keep this activity at short periods usually less than an hour. When I first started cycling I was in so much pain for days, and as crazy as it sounds I had to begin this activity only able to do it for approximately ten-to-fifteen minutes a few times per week.

Relaxation Techniques

I really suggest you add relaxation techniques to your daily routine, and in future articles, I will get into these in more detail to help you get started. For now, I recommend you try listening to meditation music to start the relaxation into your daily routine, and I find this works the best for me in the evenings to prepare me for a better night’s sleep. Sleep or the lack of sleep is a major trigger for many of us, so if you experience problems with this, mediation music could benefit you.

Anxiety And Stress

Anxiety and stress are a major trigger for pretty much everyone despite how healthy you are, but when you are living with symptoms from autoimmune disease’s anxiety and stress is one of your worse enemies. Relaxation techniques will help you learn to relax and ease your anxiety from your stress, so that is another good reason to consider learning how to use them. You will at first find even being able to relax with mediation music to be a challenge, but like anything else with practice you will benefit more and more the more you practice.

Best Herbs To Be Using

Herbs I have found to be another awesome addition to my own treatment plan, and the best herbs I recommend you start with are:

  • Rosemary
  • Turmeric
  • Cloves
  • Ginger

These three supplements are often the best ones to start with, but I do suggest you have regular blood work to be sure you are not in need of other supplements your body might be lacking. You see people with autoimmune disease’s often don’t absorb the vitamins and minerals from their foods as they should, so many of us are in need of more supplements than others all depending on your own immune system and diseases.


Education and support groups are a great source to learn to manage your symptoms, and that is the reason I created this community in the hopes of sharing information that is going to help as many people as I can. So keeping up with what is new in the autoimmune disease world is another important strategy to be using, and by leaving comments with questions or sharing what is working for you is encouraged.

  1. Wow! This post was amazing and very informative. I have hashimotos and I had no idea it was an autoimmune disease! My doctors did not tell me! I have been changing up my diet because I also have bad arthritis in my joints and I am only 44 yrs old, anti-inflammatory foods are very helpful in relieving my symptoms and walking for exercise I can only do for short time periods.   6. Thanks for this great article. I really appreciate the natural treatment plan and anti-inflammatory foods list.
    I suffer from inflammation in my neck and knee from old injuries and should eat more of the foods you have listed.
    I love hot tea as well and noticed you mentioned some herbs; rosemary, turmeric, cloves, and ginger.
    Do you know of a hot tea with those herbs in it? It sounds like it would be delicious!

      You sound very sweet, I do hope your inflammation in your neck and knee
      does not give you too much pain. I have the same problem with my neck,
      and winter is very hard for me.

      You can purchase the teas separately, but more likely not combined in
      one tea. The herbal teas are very good for you, but those on my list
      are extra powerful anti-inflammatory herbs.


  7. There’s been a bigger awareness with my health lately. I’ve noticed that whenever I have a large intake of sugar, not only does the inflammation in my knees flare up, I also get a stuffy nose and I sneeze a lot.

    In the past I thought it was just dust allergies causing it. Testing this correlation out has been done a few times now, so away with the processed sugar and more of the anti-inflammatory foods.

      Just think of any foods that are not natural and are processed as foods, not the best
      choices if you have autoimmune diseases. Actually everyone with autoimmune is a little
      different since many of us have different food allergies and intolerances, so natural
      unprocessed foods should be 90% of our diets
